Determining the Value of Your Gold

Two factors are used when determining the value of your gold: weight and purity.

First, let's examine how weight affects value. At Poplar Jewelry & Loan, we use a state-certified scale to weigh precious metals. Typically, precious metals are weighed by pennyweight (dwt), with 20 pennyweights being equal to one ounce. After we know the weight of your gold, it's time to determine the Karat or, in other words, the percentage of pure (24kt) gold that the object contains.

You're likely familiar with the terms 18kt, 14kt, and 10kt. But do you know what these numbers mean? If you know fractions, this system is simple:

  • Pure gold is considered 24kt.
  • 18kt gold contains 18 parts pure gold and 6 parts other metals.
  • 14kt gold contains 14 parts pure gold and 10 parts other metals.
  • 10kt gold contains 10 parts pure gold and 14 parts other metals.

In fractions, this is shown as:

  • 18/24 = 0.75 pure
  • 14/24 = 0.583 pure
  • 10/24 = 0.416 pure

When we know the item's weight and purity, we can determine a fair purchase price.

The Benefits of Brick & Mortar

We've all heard of the jewelry and gold dealers who purchase through the mail or set up in hotel rooms. It's crucial to remember that many of these dealers are not licensed by the state of Maryland. They can be here one day and gone the next. Additionally, these dealers pay very high costs for their TV commercials and full-page news ads, thereby forcing them to pay very little for your gold. When you do business with a local brick and mortar shop like Poplar Jewelry & Loan, you can rest assured that we'll be here to support you and do business again in the future.

A Second (or First) Opinion

We always welcome and appreciate the opportunity to provide an offer on your jewelry items. If you already have an offer, come to us for a second opinion. After all, you should have more than one option when making these important decisions. And we're confident that our offer will exceed any that you already have. In fact, two independent and undercover news teams, Channel 11 and Channel 2 News, both discovered that we consistently pay the most for gold. To demonstrate our commitment and ensure your trip isn't wasted, we will pay 10% more than any legitimate offer you receive. However, we don't believe that we'll need to resort to that. As a gold buyer, our offers are typically already higher than the competition! See for yourself by letting us make an offer before you tell us about your previous offers.

Valuable Information From Your Local Pawnbroker in Parkville, MD

Is pawning the right option for you? Take a minute to read through these frequently asked questions from our customers.
For more information, don't hesitate to call us today at (410) 663-1458 to speak with the finest pawnbroker in Parkville, MD, and Dundalk, MD.

What is pawning?

Also known as a repurchase agreement, pawning is a way to turn your valuables (jewelry, silver, watches, collectibles, electronics, etc.) into cash for an emergency or temporary need. The dealer keeps your items or collateral for a pre-determined period, during which you have the right to either take back the items, extend the agreement, or let the pawn expire and forfeit the item.

How much will I get for my item?

Because pawning is a tool used to solve temporary problems, it's important to ask for the amount you need to solve your current issue. Don't forget that there are fees associated with our service and that you must repurchase the item to receive it back. Remember: we don't want to keep your items! We prefer that you pick your items up, allowing us to do business with you again in the future. Additionally, when you come back for your item, it signals to us that your problem is solved and that we helped you get there!

What are the pawn charges?

As with our gold buying service, we cherish our loyal customers and are always aggressively on the lookout for new customers. Therefore, we offer a 50% discount on the rate that any customer is currently paying elsewhere. Alternatively, we can offer one month free of charge on your first pawn! Yes, that means we will give you our money for one month for free. You must secure the money with an item of value; however, there is no waiting or credit check involved.

Please note that these offers cannot be combined.

A Final Note

Here at Poplar Jewelry & Loan, we pledge to treat you respectfully and protect all your valuables. It's important to us that we return your items in the same condition as when you brought them in. When you need a helping hand, know that we're here to support you.
